Focus On : The Sunset Lamp
Lozi's plywood lamp with the magical glow: The Sunset Lamp.
Discover the story behind this beautiful design, how it is made and how Lozi has adapted it for an upcoming project with The Rio Cinema.
Lozi's Sunset Lamp first came into existence in 2015 as part of the collection Lozi launched at 100% Design that September. A few months earlier, our founder Soroush had been on a long road trip down the coast of Portugal with a couple of friends, enjoying the food and sunshine the country has to offer. Whilst surfing on the coast just south of Lisbon, in the evenings they would have dinner on a cliff top overlooking the Atlantic, admiring the sunset and the light reflecting in the ocean. The light was so magical they all wished they could bring it home with them, to brighten the significantly less sunny days here in the UK, and that is how the idea for the sunset lamp first came about.
Wanting to create a lamp that not only looked like a setting sun but also gave off the same quality of light was no easy feat. After experimenting with a variety of materials, Soroush finally settled on pine veneer for its defined striations and particularly orange glow The next hurdle was manufacturing the sunset's circular shape, used as a structure for the veneer to sit on. Before Lozi had a CNC machine, it had to be made by vacuum pressing plywood into a perfect circle. This was an extremely fiddly process but still less fiddly than cutting a perfect circle by hand. The sides were originally from solid plywood, with only the front and back veneer. Since acquiring the CNC router, the circular structure is cut from a flat sheet of plywood. This mean the top can now also be made of translucent veneer, letting out even more light.
After several modifications, the sunset is now available in Lozi's Online Shop and physical store on Hackney road. It comes in two sizes: Big (45x45x17cm - £150) and Small (38x38x16 cm - £110)
The sunset originally had a sister design, a standing floor lamp about the height of a bedside table. Originally intended to double as a coffee or side table, this design was discontinued before the purchase of the CNC as it was too costly to manufacture. With a few minor modifications we hope to bring a version of this design back in the coming months!
The sunset lamp is a versatile design, allowing Lozi to easily create bespoke one of a kind versions upon request.
The workshop is full of ceiling circles designed to soften the light given without getting in the way. The squiggle ceiling lamp design seen below was made especially to accompany a client's kitchen. The translucency fo the veneer casts a warm glow in the evening, making their kitchen space cosy and welcoming, while the open bottom ensurs there is enough light to cook with. Made from two "double 8" shapes cut from a sheet of plywood with pine veneer wrapped around, this take on the sunset is the perfect finishing touch on this mini kitchen!
If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram you may have seen our very exciting news! Lozi is sponsoring and designing a fantastic new bar for The Rio Cinema in Dalston, East London. The long corridor leading to the bar was in dire need in of some interesting lighting so we decided to give Lozi's classic the Sunset Lamp a cinematic twist: A cutout flat piece of plywood slotted inside casts a film reel shadow on the veneer when turned on, but remains invisible otherwise. Just fix it onto the wall, with a segment to the bottom of the lamp left open to light the floor, and you have beautiful lighting fit for the iconic cinema!
Not only have we created a brand new sunset design specially for The Rio, we are bringing the translucent backlit veneer effect to the bar itself... Inspired by an art deco drinking hole from a cult 80s film (can you guess which one?), the new bar at the Rio will combine Lozi's minimal aesthetic with The Rio's cinematic history. You can find the Sunset Lamp in our Online Shop and Physical Store at 278 Hackney Road, London E2 7SJ.
