A practical home for better quality of life

Laura, London E2

A new home for a new pace of life

After years of living on the outskirts of North London, Laura and her partner, both healthcare professionals, were looking for a more vibrant pace of life.  Swapping leafy suburbia for Hackney’s eclectic creative energy, they wanted to make the most of having all London has to offer on their doorstep, especially given their globetrotting lifestyle took them away from home regularly.

With their beloved cat in tow, they moved into the Hide development just across the road from our Work/Shop, downsizing from a large house to a 2 bedroom flat. Passionate about supporting local craftspeople and artists, Laura has curated an original collection of clothing, paintings and curios that had already been edited during the move.  She needed practical furniture that would enhance the existing space and that could also display and protect her treasures.

Lozi was the perfect choice to expand on the existing joinery, having originally created the wardrobes and kitchen cabinetry for the Hide development six years ago.

Seamless design, six years apart

The Hide development is known for its elegant interior that plays on contrasting materials in a coordinated colour scheme - raw concrete and plaster contrasts with cherry wood and terrazzo tiling.  Any further cabinetry added to the space needed to feel seamless, as if designed all in one go.

Expanding on our initial designs, we maintained the existing aesthetic and design vocabulary while introducing new fitted elements. These included bespoke wardrobes, a desk, fold-down Murphy bed, and a standalone media unit. By incorporating details that echo the original work and using the same soft cherry veneer, the new additions integrate seamlessly, appearing as though they were part of the original scheme.

For the small storage cupboard and pantry, we chose a white laminate finish—the only new material introduced—to enhance light reflection and make these tight spaces easier to clean.

A versatile spare room

The second bedroom, as is common in many small flats, needed to serve several functions.  With large double windows overlooking the treetops, this room needed to combine practical office space for working from home with a comfortable guest bedroom.Crucially, Laura wanted to retain as much adaptable floorspace as possible.

The only existing cabinetry in this room was a pair of small wardrobes nestled into an alcove to the right of the double windows. Mirroring these details and finish, we designed a multifunctional set-up to be fitted along the opposite wall. This new arrangement features a tall wardrobe unit that matches the existing cabinets, alongside a fold-down Murphy bed and desk station that offers views over the leafy park and Hackney City Farm.

Fold down Murphy bed

Maintaining as much flexible floorspace as possible was our main design objective in this space. Instead of a sofa bed, which would have taken up too much room, we created a custom-fitted fold-down Murphy bed that houses a standard double mattress for a great night’s sleep.

Clad in a smooth cherry veneer to harmonize with the flat's existing decor, it is easy to open out and put away.  When the bed is stored, it integrates seamlessly with the surrounding cabinetry, linking the wardrobe and desk to showcase the beauty of uninterrupted cherry veneer panelling.

An inspiring work-from-home desk

In the corner by the window is Laura’s comfortable work-from-home setup. This space is bathed in morning light, which, along with views of the park and large summer trees, makes it the perfect place to begin the day. The design is soft and inviting, featuring curved corners on both the desk and the shelving above.

Wardrobes designed 6 years apart

On the left hand side, a simple cupboard finishes off the cabinetry in this space. Designed to mirror the existing wardrobes in the opposite alcove, a tall door hides adjustable shelving, with three lower drawers adding extra accessible storage. This cupboard's width creates space alongside the murphy bed, facilitating access from both sides and allowing the bedroom door to close.

Pantry

As part of our original work for the Hide development, we designed and installed a fully fitted kitchen, clad in cherry with a white laminate kitchen counter top. To the kitchen's left, a door opens to a small pantry cupboard that needed clever storage solutions. To maximize this tight space without impeding the washing machine, we designed narrow shelving sized precisely for storage jars and closed cupboards with adjustable shelving all finished in light reflecting (and easy to clean) white laminate.

Sideboard and media unit

The final piece we designed for the large, open-plan living area was the only free-standing item: an elegant sideboard. This versatile unit combines a media console, storage cabinet, and display shelving.

Its left side features open shelving, perfect for showcasing Laura’s extensive and proudly displayed collection of ceramic curios, all sourced from local craftspeople. Beneath this, two large cupboards with sliding doors provide essential storage for books, tableware, and other items.

The right hand side has been designed as a media unit, providing a stand for Laura’s large flatscreen TV. Below the screen, a custom-designed recess houses a long sound bar without affecting the sound quality.  Clutter is neatly managed with two sets of drawers, painted in reds that echo the tones of the terrazzo flooring, ideal for tidying away cables, remotes, and other technology.
