The Point Theatre

In collaboration with Studio Three Sixty Photography by Simon Kennedy

A versatile, modular and practical space that reflects the creative and groundbreaking energy of the theatre’s programming

Based in the centre of Eastleigh, Southampton, The Point is a regional powerhouse for contemporary dance, aerial and circus, theatre and combined arts, specialising in risk-taking contemporary performance. They tasked theatre consultants Studio Three Sixty with creating a bespoke modular performance and rehearsal space that could also double as a theatre or seminar room.

Lozi created a collection of modern bench sets for this striking space, made entirely from birch plywood and painted in two of our signature colours. Each piece has been carefully designed to maximise space, comfort and durability, whilst retaining the relaxed nature of their original inspiration - school benches. The entire room is finished with a series of large colourful overhead lighting.

Versatility above all - these benches needed to work with a myriad of different setups. The theatre had great plans for this space, using it as a classic theatre auditorium which could also be turned into a workshop room or emptied for rehearsals. Creating a series of benches that could be laid out, combined or removed as the theatre needed was the perfect solution.

The two benches are designed to fit one under the other to simplify storage. The blue bench is slightly lower to not obstruct the view from the back rows. Their smooth curved legs are designed to minimise scratching on the linoleum flooring and the curved backrest and seat have been carefully crafted for maximum comfort.

Our biggest engineering challenge was keeping the vacuum-pressed seat and backrest flush with the base - to do so took hours of prototyping to make sure the lines all met perfectly.
