A future proof family home

Jose & Susana, London N1

A home for the whole family

When Jose and Susana first discovered Lozi, they had recently moved to Shoreditch, into a compact three bedroom flat in a converted building that used to house Alfred Hitchcock’s film studio. During a Sunday morning stroll to the nearby Columbia Road flower market, they discovered our Work/Shop and fell in love with our elegant yet playful details.

With two young children, they wanted to create their perfect family home: a space that took their children into consideration as much as themselves. A creative and design loving family, they were looking for flexible furniture that could adapt as their children grew up and would showcase their beautiful collection of designer objects and treasures collected from years living abroad.

Maintaining a cohesive design language flowing throughout was essential, one that would appeal to both adults and children, all without losing the warmth and welcome feeling of a family home.

Bright and open living space

In the living space, two open plan shelving units mirror each other on opposite sides of the living room, one housing their TV and the other serving as a bookshelf and home office. Making use of the whole space from floor to ceiling, the open plan shelves give generous storage space without enclosing or dominating the room, allowing their beautiful curation of objects to speak for themselves.

With quite low ceilings, the family wanted to maintain a sense of airy lightness in their home.  Lozi’s designer Rowena chose to use a light birch plywood finish in every room, adding some fun pops of colour with painted cabinet doors and laminated surfaces bringing in personality that echoes the family themselves.

Space Saving Folding Table

Jose and Susana came to Lozi with a design challenge - a folding dining table, but with a twist.  Their dining space was the main open plan area of their home, and they wanted to transform it into a versatile and multifunction room thanks to a folding table that was big enough for family dinners without having to give up precious floor or wall space.

This meant the dining room table couldn’t fold away vertically like traditional Murphy tables.  Instead, it would need to fold away into the sideboard. Our designer Rowena, working closely with our workshop team to prototype several ideas, devised this ingenious butterfly leaf table design, effectively splitting their dinner table into two halves that each slot away neatly into recesses built into their kitchen sideboard cabinet.  By splitting the table in half, the plywood sideboard can remain quite shallow, around 300mm deep, avoiding overwhelming the space and freeing up as much floor space as possible for family games or yoga classes.

Each half of their space saving dining table design features one of our signature Wave joints, creating an intriguing detail both when in use or put away. The opposing ends of the folding table are securely built into the sideboard, pivoting around thick solid wood dowels, ensuring this table will stand the test of time (and of young children!)

Adjustable Children’s Storage

In the two children’s rooms, longevity was key.  Jose and Susana wanted a space that could not only physically adapt as their children got bigger but could also accommodate their changing tastes and interests as they became teenagers.

In each room, we designed a minimal open plan shelving unit, with a clever adjustable height desk finished in durable pale green Fenix laminate.  The open plan dowel shelving, echoing the living room design, is bright, practical yet unobtrusive, a perfect backdrop to display all their children’s favourite things whilst still providing plenty of cupboard space to hide away the inevitable kids mess.

Space saving overhead cupboards

Jose and Susana’s home needing every bit of storage available, we created these clever over the door shelving systems in the bedrooms, maintaining the same open plan birch plywood design seen throughout their home. In the recess above the door, deep overhead cupboard space is perfect for hiding away unsightly or rarely used items, making the most of what would otherwise have been dead space.

For the finishing touches, we added several elegant curved mirrors, softening the rooms and opening the space.

Shallow and space efficient storage units have been dotted around the flat, from shoe storage slotted neatly into an alcove in the hallway to this clever vanity design in the parent’s bedroom.

By considering their family as a whole and designing with their children in mind, Jose and Susana have created their perfect family home, that will grow up alongside their children and provide the backdrop for endless happy memories.
