Compact living in central London
Joseph was moving to a studio flat just off London's Russell Square and wanted to furnish his new place for efficient and minimal single living, without compromising on comfort or aesthetics. He imagined a grown-up, calm and minimal atmosphere that felt like a real home - and not at all like going back to living in a student flat. There were only 26 square metres to play with and the room was lined with pipes and awkward alcoves, so it would be essential to utilise every corner of the space.
He came to Lozi having admired our minimal studio flat design in Clapham for Lavan and worked with us on a plan to reconfigure his own studio flat interior with Lozi's custom plywood furniture. Together we were able to size each element to perfectly fit within alcoves and around pipes, making the most of the space and leaving the central floor area as open as possible. Different co-ordinating finishes created distinct zones for different activities within one room.
Joseph has now settled in and has plenty of room to cook, entertain and have guests to stay, as well as working from home a couple of days a week, in a compact pared-back home that has exactly what he needs and nothing else.
Kitchen
Joseph wanted the kitchen to be generous and fully functional despite the size of the flat. Careful planning enabled us to fit all the kitchen appliances he wanted into the tight space available. A rack for bottles above the fridge keeps the top of the units neatly in line all the way along, snugly within the alcove on this side of the room. Cherry storage cupboards to the left of the workspace are visually part of the kitchen but can also be used for other living room storage if needed.
Dining
A bespoke round plywood dining table allows Joseph to host 2-3 people and fits exactly in the space of the bay window. It’s illuminated from above by our Lozi Wave Beam light.
Work from Home
A fold-down desk with storage above and below to one side of the sofa allows Joseph to work from home a couple of days per week, but keep work serenely out of sight the rest of the time. The simple plywood mechanism locks the work surface in place while keeping the aesthetic consistent, whether it’s open or closed.
Sofa
The generous sofa we created in collaboration with Shoreditch Design Rooms is the same size as a UK single bed; there's no compromise on comfort when Joseph sits down at the end of the day and it's also no problem to put up a visiting friend or family member for the night.
Both corners of the sofa have generous classic Lozi curves that keep the flow of the space and save everyone’s shins. Deep drawers provide extra discrete storage underneath.
Storage
Storage to the right of the sofa makes the most of every single corner, with custom L-shaped units to navigate ducting for pipework. In classic Lozi style, cupboards below keep things nice and tidy while shelves above let Joseph display his favourite books.
Bed
This custom raised platform bed, situated where the kitchen used to be, allows pipework to pass underneath to the new kitchen and creates an opportunity for a chest of drawers in the footboard.
Enclosing it in soft curves creates a snug pod for sleeping, while cherry details and discrete lighting give a cosy nighttime atmosphere. The step was also designed for accessing higher cupboards around the flat.

After submitting your enquiry and confirming a quote that suits your budget, you'll be allocated one of our highly skilled designer-makers and they will schedule a site visit, where relevant. Based on your requirements and personal style, we'll provide a digital 2-D design to visualise the project outcome. Your designer-maker will ensure the experience is stress-free, supporting important design decisions and providing tailored, design-led solutions. All Lozi furniture is then made in-house and if appropriate, carefully installed by the designer-maker and workshop team.
