Light and airy wardrobes that make the most of an attic conversion’s eaves

Mickey and Simon requested twin wardrobes for a bright and airy converted loft, seeking to make the most of the available space under the eaves. Their design taste paired the traditional Georgian qualities of the house with mid-century-inspired products and as you entered the space there was a real sense of calm. They needed the storage capacity but were keen to maintain the airy spacious feel.

Mickey used to own an Art Gallery and wanted a place to display her collection of colourful artworks and books, with room to hide away long coats and dresses, while Simon wanted more hidden-away shelving. Taking all of this into account, we designed a step-roof wardrobe in birch ply finished with crisp white high-pressure-laminate that maximised the highest point in the ceiling. The white ply complimented the feature wall and stopped the wardrobe from feeling intrusive.

We tailored the inside of each compartment exactly to what they would be using it for, even down to the smallest detail of a pegboard in the small triangular space in the corners, giving purpose to a difficult space. Designing two curved edges framing the bed kept the space feeling tranquil and matched the shapes of their Soho home bed. This curve also mirrored the shapes within their Tom Raffield handcrafted light. Our last Lozi touch was to include bedside tables that have small cuts in the tops, keeping the room cable-free. Even in full use, these two bright and spacious wardrobes keep the room feeling tranquil. The open shelving is now filled up with plants, colourful artwork and memories, giving those final personal touches to the piece.
