Kids Bedroom Design

Naomi & Tom, London E1

Two ‘rooms’ within one. A playful and exciting hideaway for children.

Naomi, Tom and their three children needed more space for their two daughters aged 6 and 9. Through the haze of parental tiredness, they had collected an array of mismatched furniture that only solved their immediate storage needs. These quick-fix solutions gradually became problems; not wanting to leave their beloved three-bedroom home, Naomi and Tom decided on a single long-lasting investment. Our solution was to create two ‘rooms’ within one, without compromising the space.

We designed two enclosed pods for the girls with a softly curved entrance door leading to their own Narnia. The separate spaces allow the sisters to develop their identities without impacting each other, reducing conflict and creating a calm atmosphere. A strong dowel ladder positioned to the side of the door leads to a spacious double bed and bookshelf. We included circular handles within the safety barrier for easy grip, the shape maintaining the softness of the overall design. Beside their pillows we added a small cut-out, allowing the parents to read to the girls at night.

The room needed to have an abundance of storage. For the pods, we included a large built-in wardrobe, drawers, bookshelves and an adjustable desk that overlooks the large window. The desk height can be easily adapted as the girls get older. On the opposite side of the room sits a large box with partitions and an overhead cupboard, the box doubling up as a cosy reading seat. Despite having a generous amount of storage, a modern and considered lifestyle comes into practice. If the girls’ belongings go beyond capacity, they must decide what to keep.

The gentle, natural colour palette chosen by the girls will grow with their age. The bright, playful, childlike colours come from their books, toys, and artwork. As their belongings change with the girls’ age, the natural plywood and painted base colour become a new, mature aesthetic. We included natural plywood amongst the easy-to-clean laminate to give a cosy, cabin-like feel. The plywood is hard-wearing enough that it will last but, for all general wear and tear that may happen over the years, the natural plywood (i.e the desk) can be lightly sanded to remove any marks made during their younger years.
