Buller & Rice

Sustainable Hairdressers, Walthamstow E17

Laid-back Californian elegance comes in East London

For their second salon in Walthamstow, Anita Rice and Stephen Buller wanted to continue exploring the modern, laid back and welcoming luxury their Newington Green salon has become known for. Drawing inspiration from the friendly Walthamstow area and existing shop features, they wanted an elegant, soft and relaxed interior straight out of California, where their customers could feel at home.

This approach to luxury, forgoing ostentatious glassiness in favour of a warm and welcoming appeal, has become Buller and Rice’s signature style, a novel and groundbreaking take on luxury hairdressing that centres around Lozi’s designs.

Expanding on the sustainable ethos at the core of Buller and Rice, our makers modernised and updated some of the pieces we created for Anita’s first salon, re-finishing and adapting them before creating some new unique items that complete the space.

Swathed in dusty peach and terracotta tones as well as light soft wood finishes, the waiting area had a very specific brief - to recreate the feeling of being in a friend’s living room, somewhere their clients could relax and start to enjoy the salon experience. Working with the existing grey and pink terracotta floor, we created this elegant curved seating area, finished in maple veneer and stacked with textural cushions and graphic wallhangings.

The soft lighting and offbeat shelving system help define the space whilst there is plenty of storage space underneath the bench. The curved welcome desk by Smith & Goat adds a fun and relaxed feel to the front of house, hinting at dreamy tiki beach bar designs and mirroring the curves of Lozi’s repurposed U-Shelves hanging above.

Re-purposing some of the fixtures from Ralph & Rice, Anita’s first salon on Brick Lane, gave our makers a wonderful opportunity to modernise and improve our own pieces, changing small details to enhance both the customer’s and hair dresser’s experience.

The metal mirrors have been recoloured to a deep burgundy, with a higher, narrower shelf more comfortable for tall clients. A discreet handbag hook is hidden behind each mirror.

The curved cupboards and drawers have been re-sanded and finished before being fitted in a new, more practical configuration between each station. The whole look is finished with beautifully re-upholstered vintage Belmont chairs.

Upcycled trolleys and shelving has been updated from Anita’s first salon
Re-finsihed U shelves are offset by Smith & Goat’s bespoke concrete table top.
New bespoke seating for the entrance is welcoming, comfortable and practical.

For the finishing touches, we re-surfaced the cork cabinets in our bespoke Bio-resin and waste sawdust surface. Leaving a small ridge of the original cork surface around the edges as a reminder of the transformation, these cabinets are now hardwearing and sustainable, perfectly adapted to the look and function of the salon.
